We travel with one which has both a 1 am and a 2 amp port which supplies power to a cell phone and a tablet As is pointed out above you can also use an adapter which plugs into the "cigarette lighter" socket. I have used several map apps in the past but now solely use Google Maps and have the map for South Africa - as well as other countries we visit - downloaded onto the phone for offline use.Īs far as keeping your cell phone charged, you can use a Powerbank or the USB plug built into the car. However, you do not need to be connected to a local network for the GPS system on a cell phone to work and use it as a SatNav. We do get a buy a local sim and a PAYG data/call plan when we go to South Africa which makes life a little easier. I also use the GPS system on my cell phone as a SatNav.
